The following case study is a true story about a lady who presented to Dr Correa at the TMJ Institute of Newport Beach for the treatment of a TMJ Disorder. Orange County patients are screened, evaluated and treated for jaw pain and other problems. This patient we'll call "Nancy" presented for a consultation regarding a 6 year history of jaw pain and headaches. Nancy stated that her problems of facial pain started shortly after having reconstructive dentistry that resulted in an unfavorable change to her bite. Nancy's symptoms consisted of 4 chief complaints: jaw pain, pain when chewing, muscle soreness, and ear pain. On a scale from 1-10, Nancy rated her beginning pain symptoms at an intensity of 5. Nancy also stated that she had been in several motor vehicle accidents that had resulted in whiplash and head trauma. She also had seen a chiropractor for hip evaluation. She admitted that she also suffers from nighttime teeth grinding or bruxism. Upon TMJ examination, it was discovered that Nancy's temporomandibular joints were out of alignment and that her bite was locked in a constrained position. There was no freedom of movement for the jaw to relax and no room for the disc to function, recapture, and translate. The following is a CAT scan of her joints revealing the malpositioning of her joints:

In order to treat Nancy's joints to a level of optimum health, it would be necessary to unlock her bite and create room for ideal function. Once the bite is freed from constriction the joints reciprocate by decompressing. The result is a smooth translation and a pain-free function. Nancy elected to have TMJ therapy with Dr Correa at the TMJ Institute of Newport Beach in Orange County, California. The TMJ Institute services other local areas such as Irvine, Laguna Beach, Huntington Beach, Dana Point, Laguna Niguel, Laguna Hills, Mission Viejo, Rancho Santa Margarita, Coto de Caza, Corona del Mar, and Newport Coast. Nancy's TMJ disorder was treated non-surgically using computerized electrodiagnostic instrumentation. Once the pain-free jaw position was determined, she was fitted with a neuromuscular orthosis that created balance back into her jaw and muscles. The removable appliance was designed to fit onto the lower dentition and was comfortable to wear for the patient:

Following successful TMJ therapy at the TMJ Institute of Newport Beach in Orange County, California, Nancy became a happy camper. She now has returned to her regular activities of cooking and painting. TMJ disorders affect many people from all walks of life. It is worthy to note that the effects of jaw pain and headaches can now be treated successfully and non-surgically at the TMJ Institute of Newport Beach of Orange County, California. Dr Correa is the founder and director of the TMJ Institute and encourages chronic pain patients to schedule for the TMJ Consultation.
